Not-a-Number
<mathematics> (NaN) An <a href="">IEEE floating pointa> representation for the result of a numerical operation which cannot return a valid number value. A NaN can result from multiplying an infinity by a zero, or from subtracting one infinity from another [what else?]. NaN is encoded as a special <a href="">bit patterna> [what pattern?] which would otherwise represent a <a href="">floating-pointa> number. It is used to signal error returns where other mechanisms are not convenient, e.g. a hardware <a href="">floating-point unita> and to allow errors to propagate through a calculation. Similar bit patterns represent positive and negative <a href="">overflowa> and <a href="">underflowa> and the positive and negative infinities resulting from <a href="">division by zeroa>. {<a href="http://psc.edu/general/software/packages/ieee/ieee.html">Bit patterns (http://psc.edu/general/software/packages/ieee/ieee.html)a>}. NaN

In computing, NaN (), standing for Not a Number, is a member of a numeric data type that can be interpreted as a value that is undefined or unrepresentable, especially in floating-point arithmetic. Systematic use of NaNs was introduced by the IEEE 754 floating-point standard in 1985, along with the representation of other non-finite quantities such as infinities.

In mathematics, zero divided by zero is undefined and is therefore represented by NaN in computing systems. The square root of a negative number is not a real number, and is therefore also represented by NaN in compliant computing systems. NaNs may also be used to represent missing values in computations.

Two separate kinds of NaNs are provided, termed quiet NaNs and signaling NaNs. Quiet NaNs are used to propagate errors resulting from invalid operations or values. Signaling NaNs can support advanced features such as mixing numerical and symbolic computation or other extensions to basic floating-point arithmetic.

2. Invited or not, a number of unseasonably–tanned bleach blonde young women donned their designer mini dresses and Jimmy Choos and headed for Great John Street.
3. The estimated range suggests that there is uncertainty about its value – and the uncertainty is greater than that implied by the fact that I mentioned a range and not a number.
4. From what the reviewers say, he succeeded brilliantly, so when someone says that 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust or if someone mentions Auschwitz, you can understand that it is not a number that died but a person who was murdered.
5. "I am not a number," he declared in The Prisoner, "I am a free man." But increasingly we are numbers – digitised and quantified, rewritten as algorithms and asked for our personal codes to confirm who we are before call centre workers will deign to bandy words with us.
